Types Of Radiation Detectors

Radiation Measurement Tasks

Radiation measurement will be performed only when it is suspected that radioactive radiation is possible somewhere. The main task is to measure the level of radiation and to immediately take the necessary protective measures. Radioactive radiation can be measured using several types of radiation detectors.

There are three types of radiation detection instruments that are most commonly used because they provide the most accurate results.

Gas-filled detectors are used most often. There are several types of these detectors, but each of them works on the same principle. When the gas in the detector comes into contact with the radiation, it will react, causing the gas to become ionized and create an electronic charge that is measured by the meter. Based on this measurement, the level of radioactive radiation is determined.

Radiation Detectors

Another type of these detectors are scintillation detectors. This instrument works by producing light when radiation occurs. If the radiation is high, the light will be very strong, if the radiation is low, the light will be very weak. Based on this, the level of radiation is calculated.

The third type of detectors are solid state detectors. A semiconductor material such as silicon is placed in these detectors. It is placed in two layers through which electrons can pass. Based on the number of electrons in the air, it is possible to determine the amount of radioactive radiation in a certain space.

In order to achieve a correct measurement of radioactive radiation, one must have one of these three types of radiation detectors, which can be used for very precise measurements. After this measurement, it is necessary to undertake appropriate protection and decontamination as soon as possible.
